The Record Society

Induction into The Record Society, named in honor of Sigma Xi's largest individual planned gift donor, is the highest recognition a donor can receive. In anticipation of the 125th Anniversary of Sigma Xi the Board of Directors authorized the creation of The Record Society to recognize those members and friends that share the enthusiasm and love for Sigma Xi exemplified by Mr. LeRoy E. Record, and whose lifetime and legacy gifts further Sigma Xi's mission to advance science and engineering.

Qualifications
Supporters must make a one-time gift of $10,000 or more, or make a planned gift in excess of $25,000 anytime during a given fiscal year after July 1, 2009.

Examples of how you can make your donation:

  • Contribution of $10,000 or more to the Sigma Xi Fund or a Designated Gift. Your gift can be a single donation of $10,000 or more, or made in installments totaling $10,000 completed over 12 consecutive months.

  • Inclusion of Sigma Xi in your current Will and Testamentary Plan. We request that official copies of your current and any updates of your Will and/or Testimentary Plans be recorded with the Society. Your documentation will be kept confidential and may not be accessed without your express permission by anyone other than the Executive and Development Directors.

  • Inclusion of Sigma Xi in your current Estate & Trust Plan. We request that official copies of your current and any updates of your Estate and/orTrust Plans be recorded with the Society. Your documentation will be kept confidential and may not be accessed without your express permission by anyone other than the Executive and Development Directors.

  • Designation of Sigma Xi as the current beneficiary and owner of a Life Insurance or Annuity valued at $25,000 or more. The most current and complete Insurance and/or Annuity Policies issued by your underwriter should be provided to the Society. Your documentation will be kept confidential and may not be accessed without your express permission by anyone other than the Executive and Development Directors. The Development Director can assist you in authorizing changes in ownership and beneficiary designation with your insurance or annuity provider upon request.

  • Designation of Sigma Xi as the current beneficiary of your IRA, Pension or other Retirement Plan. We request that original and current statements issued by your retirement account or pension provider designating Sigma Xi as the sole or co-beneficiary be supplied to the Society. Your documentation will be kept confidential and may not be accessed without your express permission by anyone other than the Executive and Development Directors. Upon request the Development Director can assist you in authorizing changes in ownership and beneficiary designation with your insurance or annuity provider upon request.
Induction into The Record Society can take place as part of the Society's Annual Meeting & International Research Conference or as part of a chapter or locally hosted event.

CONFIDENTIALITY STATEMENT: Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society operates in strict compliance with a Donor of Bill of Rights, the AFP Code of Ethical Principles & Standards and National Committee on Planned Giving. Qualification for induction into The Record Society will be announced only with your permission. Sigma Xi will never release personal financial information or estate documentation to anyone unless authorized by the donor or the donor's survivors. It is the policy of Sigma Xi never to sell donor financial information.

A Donor Bill of Rights

Philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing that is primary to the quality of life. To assure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the not-for-profit organizations and causes they are asked to support, we declare that all donors have these rights:

I. To be informed of the organization’s mission, of the way the organization intends to use donated resources, and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.

II. To be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization’s governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities.

III. To have access to the organization’s most recent financial statements.

IV. To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given.

V. To receive appropriate acknowledgement and recognition.

VI. To be assured that information about their donations is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law.

VII. To expect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the donor will be professional in nature.

VIII. To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees of the organization, or hired solicitors.

IX. To have the opportunity for their names to be deleted from mailing lists that an organization may intend to share.

X. To feel free to ask questions when making a donation and to receive prompt, truthful and forthright answers.
